A quote I love says, “There are seven days in the week and someday isn’t one of them”. I have no idea who said it. Seriously, Google it… You either find no one said it or 7 different people… it is just one of those mysterious authors. Whoever said it though is a very smart human.

We are all guilty at one point or another, putting something off because the timing isn’t right, or like me, you’ll get to it “eventually”. I have found that when I say I will get to it one day, that one day never rolls around. It is a proven fact that you are more apt to accomplish a goal or task when you plan for it. It is when you have it written down that this is the day or time you will do it, you’re going to make it work.

With the start of a new year and with all our goals and resolutions in the forefront of our mind, it is important to keep them organized. One thing I have learned the older I get, is that life does not slow down. It just seems to get busier no matter what is happening. You throw goals of any kind of top of the every day chaos and soon you will forget about those dreams of travel, weight-loss goals or whatever else is on your plate. I love being organized. It just seems to make my life run a little smoother and the idea of not forgetting anything is delightful. You don’t want to be that person who is so overwhelmed that you forget you scheduled a lunch with someone and not show up. KEEP IT TOGETHER, SUSAN!


As much as I love the latest and greatest technology, I will always be the pen and paper type of planner. In my normal day-to-day, I have colors that are for different categories, like bills, school, work, fun, etc. It is an easy way for me to look and know right away what will be dominating my week; spoiler, it is almost always school. (Second spoiler, I am slightly OCD.) I don’t just write the everyday activities but things I need to get done, workout classes I am planning to go to, and reminders of what I need to do for my next week. Most people do not take the time to use a planner because they do not have time to get started, but it is so worth it. For me, I initially write down all details I know for a few months like the bills that are due, school due dates and since I know my work schedule through March, I write it down too. With the bulk of my planner filled, I am left with the weekly needs, wants, and goals to write. I take time at the beginning of the week, usually Sunday, to task prep my week. I like to think of this as meal prepping. So many people, myself including, take time out at the beginning of the week to meal prep to make the week ahead easier to deal with and stay on food track. Task prepping is the same thing! You are taking a few moments, to see what you already have planned, and are able to insert the needs of the week, what you would like to get done and how to plan for activities to facilitate those long-term or short-term goals. This tool is only going to make the week easier by knowing what is in store for yourself or the family and how you will be able to navigate the chaos while keeping your sanity.

I have used a few different planners but my favorite hands down is Erin Condren’s Life Planner. You can customize it to start in whatever month you want. If you wanted to order one, you could have it start in Feb 2018 so that you do not have a useless Jan 2018 that you’ll never use. Then you can decide if you want your weekly part of the planner to be vertical, horizontal or even hourly. For me, I love having the horizontal but I know a lot of people who enjoy how the vertical breaks the day up for them. Whatever, is going to help you most, go for that. The best part is you can pick from a pre-made cover OR you can design one for yourself with anything you’d like.


The cover of mine I designed myself with the words, “Purpose fuels passion” …. and my name because Lord knows I have to monogram everything. The reason I chose these words was because they hold a lot of meaning of me. When I feel I have little purpose for any part of life, my drive to continue or even finish is little to none. When you have purpose in your life and goals, it is just going to strengthen your passion. This combination is what you need for success. You need to look at your goals individually and find your purpose for said goal. When you have a game plan, and a purpose, you’re going to do things you never thought possible. For instance, if your goal is to graduate, what is the purpose of this? Is it to get your dream career, to better your own life or your families? It doesn’t matter what the purpose is, as long as you have one, know what it is, and realize that is your motivation to continue.

You don’t have to get a fancy organizer, or even a non-electronic planner. You have to figure out what works for you and take the time to task prep your life. You owe it to yourself to organize the every day chaos to achieve those goals and dreams. Don’t keep putting it off for another day. Today is your day. And when you are all done, treat yourself to a big glass of wine. No need to pencil it in. 😉
